09/07/2025Christchurch Business Improvement District (BID) wishes to reassure residents, visitors and businesses that, although ongoing roadworks have temporarily closed Willow Drive, the hotels, shops, and businesses are still open for business.
The roadworks, which started on the 24th of July, have caused disruption and delays in the town during what is the peak tourist season for many businesses. The roadworks are due to move along Willow Drive to Sopers Lane in the coming weeks, meaning that access to St Margaret’s Avenue may be affected. While some routes could be busier at peak times, there are several easy alternatives to help you reach our town centre and make the most of your visit.
Ways to navigate the traffic and road closure whilst work is taking place:
1. Park at Christchurch Riverlands Car Park (Wick Village) and take the Wick Ferry across the river to the Captains Club Hotel and stroll into town along the river.
2. Fairmile, Bargates and Barrack Road are open. From here, there is access to Saxon Square and Waitrose (Bypass) car parks, which have excellent access and a multitude of parking spaces. You can also travel down the High Street to Church Street, which carries you round to the town on a one-way system to access Wick Lane.
3. From Mudeford and Stanpit, use Christchurch Bypass, then Stoney Lane to feed into Bridge Street.
“We know the disruption is inconvenient for visitors and local businesses,” said Louise Berkhauer, Christchurch BID Joint Operations Manager. “These improvements are temporary but necessary to ensure Christchurch’s power supply is protected for the future. We encourage everyone to use the alternatives available. Christchurch’s independent shops, cafés, hotels and attractions are ready to welcome you. Please continue to support them over the next few weeks.”
Practical reminders:
– Allow extra time for your journey during busy periods.
– Check which access is open to reach your destination point before you travel, as this may change between the Fountain Roundabout/Stour Road entrance/exits.
– Consider combining your visit with lunch, shopping or a stay — there’s plenty to see and do!
– Travel by bus or train. Christchurch is well-connected.
